The Acton Courtyard Apartments (Completed 2003)

 

This 71 unit project is only the second new rental apartment housing project built in the last 20 years on University Avenue, the 2 mile long gateway to the city of Berkeley. The brash modernist design is a departure from most of the other, more traditional, buildings developed by Panoramic Interests. But it makes a bold and optimistic statement about the future of the Avenue, and presages more development to come.

 

The ground floor will include several new businesses that will add life to the neighborhood. They include: The Bread Workshop, which will have a full bakery and café; an audio bookstore; a local sign company; and a piano studio. All are slated to open in the summer of 2004.

 

Location

 

Located one mile west of Campus on University Ave., the Acton Courtyard Apartments are also across the street from Andronico’s grocery store and three blocks south of the North Berkeley BART station. The building is 50 yards from two AC Transit bus stops, which have service to the campus and the Amtrak station starting at 5:00 AM and ending at 1:00 AM.

 

The Apartments

 

The 71 apartments in the building consist of 1 and two bedroom units, many with views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate, the UC campus and the Berkeley Hills, or downtown Berkeley. Half of the apartments face a large landscaped interior courtyard, located on the second floor. There are landscaped roof decks on the fifth floor and rooftop as well

 

Extras

 

All the apartments have gas stoves and refrigerators and come with a kitchen table and chairs for the use of the tenants. The apartments have spacious bathrooms, heated towel racks, and ample cabinet storage space in the kitchens.

 

There are high-speed internet access outlets (T-1) in the kitchen areas and in the bedrooms of each unit. Elfa shelving storage units are also included as part of the furnishings.

 

Security and Safety

 

The Acton Courtyard Apartments were built to the 2002 California Building Code for seismic and fire safety standards, and come with fire sprinklers in every room. There is a direct fire alarm system to thee Berkeley Fire Department. The lobby has a closed circuit TV recorder, which allows residents to see who is at the entry, and which records all entrances and exits of the people coming into the building.
