The Berkeleyan Apartments (Completed 1998)
A review of the City building records shows that The Berkeleyan Apartments to be the first new rental housing project by a private developer in the downtown area since World War II. Many apartments were built in the 60's and early 70's in other parts of Berkeley, but there was very little construction activity in the downtown proper - which is close to the UC campus and BART.
The building, designed by Berkeley architecture student Thomas Early, is a simple Mediterranean design with a tile base, a stucco middle, and modest fenestration at its top. The corner of the building is occupied by the ever popular Yali's Oxford Street Café, which is open every day, serving homemade food and baked goods. The leasing office for Panoramic Management is also located in the ground floor.
Location
On the outer edge of the downtown, The Berkeleyan Apartments sit across the street from the Northwest corner of the UC Berkeley Campus, close to many of the science buildings and laboratories. The shuttle bus to the Lawrence Berkeley Labs has a stop immediately across the street. Two blocks north of the apartments begin the restaurants and shops that comprise what is known as Berkeley's "Gourmet Ghetto." These include the long established institutions like The Cheese Board, Poulet, and Chez Panisse, as well as some comparative newcomers like The Phoenix Pastificio. One block away is Berkeley's oldest brew pub, The Triple Rock Brewery.
The downtown Berkeley BART Station is 4 blocks south, about a five minute walk.
The Apartments
The 56 apartments in the building consist of 1- and 2-bedroom units, many with views of the UC campus, the Berkeley Hills, or downtown Berkeley. Each apartment opens to an outdoor walkway, allowing light and air into the apartments from at least two directions. Additional baffling materials were added to the original specifications for the floors and walls, greatly enhancing the soundproofing. All the units have access to a 1,500 s.f. roof deck that has panoramic views of the UC Campus and San Francisco Bay.
Extras
All the apartments have gas stoves and refrigerators and come and island countertop that may serve as an eating or study area. There are high-speed internet access outlets (DSL) in the kitchen areas and in the bedrooms of each unit. Elfa shelving storage units are also included as part of the furnishings.
Security and Safety
As one of the first new rental housing projects in the downtown in several decades, The Berkeleyan Apartments are built to the 1998 seismic and fire safety standards, and comes with fire sprinklers in every room and a direct fire alarm system to the Berkeley Fire Department. Installed in the lobby is a closed circuit TV recorder, which allows residents to see who is at the entry, and which records all entrances and exits of the people coming into the building.
